CHESS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM The objective of the Chess in Schools Program is to get as many children as possible to play the game, therefore increasing the rate of Intellectual Development. This is supported by the fact that scientific researches have been done which prove that chess has a significant positive impact on children's development which improves thinking skills, concentration, memory, reading and social skills. Liguanea Chess Club has started its Chess in Schools program, which introduces chess to all Jamaican schools. The program began in the corporate area and has spread to rural and western schools, such as Manning's High, Rusea's High, Green Island High, Merlene Ottey High, Cave Valley All Age, Cocoon All Age, Esher Primary, and schools in Montego Bay, Cornwall College, Mt. Alvernia High and St. James College. In Kingston and St. Andrew a number of schools are involved; St. Hugh's High, Campion College, Ardenne High, Hillel Academy, American International, Hope Valley Experimental and Mona Preparotory. Scotia Bank Jamaica has sponsored a major part of the program, donating chess sets, clocks, and reading material for the schools. Jamaica National Building Society has also made a major contribution to Western Schools by sponsoring the teaching of chess to six of these schools. The program devised,
involves: ACCELERATED PROGRAM The accelerated program is
designed for children who believe they are ready for the rigors of
competitive chess. These children want to play in national and
international competitions. They are therefore, willing to put out much
more work in order to develop their strength of play. A maximum of six (6)
persons will be in each group and they will work with one of the top
masters in Jamaica. The accelerated session will now last two (2) hours
and together with the regular Saturday program will last three (3) hours.
The accelerated program will take place during the regular time
schedule. Research information can be
